Edward Jacobs, of East St. Marie Street, died Nov. 3, 2005 at his home.

 

He was born in Superior and lived there until he married and moved to Duluth. Edward graduated from Superior Central High School. Upon graduation he attended Superior State Teachers College and graduated with degrees in History and Social Sciences. He went on to attend graduate school at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He taught high school for a number of years before starting a business with his father Harry and brother George. The business was Duluth Paint and Glass Company. He ran th company for over 25 years. While still working, Ed served in a volunteer capacity as President of Temple Israel and President of the Jewish Education Center.

 

After Ed's retirement in 1983 he decided he wanted to make a difference in the Duluth community by becoming a very active volunteer. His volunteer services included 22 years at St. Luke's Hospital with his extended family in Medical Records, 17 years at St. Mary's Hospital, served on the American Cancer Society Board and on the Board of Directors at Temple Israel and was a Mason at the Masonic Temple for 45 years. His real passion was tutoring youngsters in reading. He knew he made a difference in their lives when he was able to take struggling readers and move them to the head of their reading class.

 

Ed was an avid reader and loved his weekly games of bridge. He was passionate about his family and was a very proud father and grandfather. For many years Ed would go west to visit his daughter's family and other family members. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda; son-in-law Fernando; and grandchildren, Alison and Jason.

 

SERVICE:11 a.m. Tuesday at Temple Israel, 1602 E 2nd St. Burial in Temple Emanuel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Ruth and Edward Jacobs Scholarship Fund at Temple Israel. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home.

Ruth Marcia Lussan Jacobs, of East St. Marie Street died July 21, 2000, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

 

She was born in St. Paul and lived there until she married and moved to Duluth.

 

Ruth graduated from St. Paul Central High School and went to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. In Duluth, she became an active community volunteer.

 

She was past president of the Temple Israel Sisterhood, a Sunday school teacher, reader to the blind and a volunteer for the Duluth Symphony Ball Committee, Tweed Gift Shop, St. Mary's Medical Center and the American Cancer Society. She was a life member of Hadassah and a member of Temple Israel Sisterhood and the Duluth Women's Club.

 

Ruth had a zeal for life. Her many loves and interests included interacting with her grandchildren, strolling around the Lakewalk, playing a round of golf, challenging herself with daily crossword puzzles, attending concerts and plays, reading novels and participating in weekly bridge games.

 

For years, Ruth and her husband, Edward, have spent winters in California close to their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. Ruth was passionate about her family and will be remembered as a devoted, loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

 

She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Edward; a daughter, Linda; a son-in-law, Fernando; and grandchildren Alison and Jason.

 

Service: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Temple Israel, 1602 E. Second St. Burial in Temple Emanuel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Ruth Jacobs Scholarship Fund at Temple Israel. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.
